We are pleased to announce the publication of a study to which we contributed, “Deciphering lineage specification during early embryogenesis in mouse gastruloids using multilayered proteomics”, in Cell Stem Cell. This research represents a significant advancement in understanding the molecular underpinnings of early mammalian development. Under the leadership of Suzan Stelloo from the lab of […]

We are excited to share our latest study published in Development, titled “Unravelling differential Hes1 dynamics during axis elongation of mouse embryos through single-cell tracking”. In this work, Yasmine led the experiments to investigate the dynamics of Hes1 gene expression in the developing vertebrate embryonic tail and its role in somitogenesis. Using an endogenously tagged […]
Dr. Ina Sonnen has authored a News & Views piece in Nature discussing a pivotal study by Olivier Pourquié’s lab, titled “Metabolic regulation of species-specific developmental rates”. The research investigates how metabolic activity influences the period of the segmentation clock during embryonic development. By comparing mouse and human models, the study reveals that metabolic rates […]
Virgínia Andrade has been awarded an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship. This fellowship supports excellent postdoctoral researchers throughout Europe and the world for a period of up to two years. With this fellowship Andrade will study the mechanochemical signalling guiding morphogenesis during development of vertebrate embryos. The results of this project will provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between mechanics and signalling regulating the segmentation of vertebrate embryos.
We are excited to announce the publication of our study, “Arnold tongue entrainment reveals dynamical principles of the embryonic segmentation clock”, in eLife. This research provides new insights into the entrainment of the segmentation clock in mouse embryos, demonstrating how its rhythm can be synchronized with external oscillatory signals. The study was initiated by Ina […]
We are excited to share our recent publication, “Live imaging of adult zebrafish cardiomyocyte proliferation ex vivo”, in Development. In this study, we developed a microfluidic system to culture slices of adult zebrafish heart tissue, enabling real-time imaging of cardiomyocyte proliferation during regeneration. This innovative approach provides a dynamic platform to study the cellular mechanisms […]
In our recent review article, “Building bridges between fields: bringing together development and homeostasis”, we explore the shared principles underlying embryonic development and tissue homeostasis. While these processes were traditionally studied separately, we highlight how both rely on similar mechanisms, such as stem cell regulation and pattern formation, to maintain tissue integrity across the lifespan. […]
Yasmine and Ina have written a short review about the different types of stem cell-based in vitro models of embryonic development. This includes embryo-like models such as blastoids and gastruloids as well as those models based on the directed differentiation of stem cells along specific trajectories, for instance the neural lineage. The publication can be […]
Together with Matthias Lutolf, Ananya Gupta and Alexa Hughes, Ina has written a review on bioengineering approaches in the establishment and optimization of embryo-like model systems. The review is part of a special issue on stem cell-based embryo-like model systems published in Stem Cell Reports. The publication can be found here. download pdf
Jan-Daniël has joined the group as PhD student. He will study signalling dynamics in the small intestine and the relevance of signalling dynamics in the context of tumorigenesis. Welcome!
